House Concurrent Resolution 161
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE MACON BEACON NEWSPAPER ON THE CELEBRATION OF ITS 150TH ANNIVERSARY.
WHEREAS, the Macon Beacon Newspaper was founded in July 1849, by Henry C. Ferris and will be celebrating its 150th Anniversary in July 1999; and
WHEREAS, the Macon Beacon remained in the Ferris Family for more than 120 years as it was passed down from Henry to his son, Phillip, then to his son, Douglas, who brought in a cousin, Brooke Ferris; and
WHEREAS, in 1972, a partnership between Brooke Ferris and Jim Robbins ended with Mr. Ferris' retirement and the paper was bought by the Robbins Family of Macon, Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, the Robbins Family published the paper until 1993 when they sold it to Scott Boyd, who continues to serve the people of Noxubee County with the newspaper; and
WHEREAS, having a circulation of 3100 readers, the Beacon is one of only a few that have been in business for 150 years and also holds the distinction of being Noxubee County's oldest continuous business; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend such outstanding businesses as the Macon Beacon, which has served the citizens of Noxubee County for 150 years:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Macon Beacon on the celebration of its 150th Anniversary and extend our heartiest wishes for many years of success.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the Macon Beacon, Mr. Scott Boyd and members of the Capitol Press Corps.
